Tributes to town councillor

TRIBUTES have been paid to town councillor John Maguire who died at his home this week. Formerly in the Merchant Navy, Mr Maguire, 61, grew up in Launceston but came to Okehampton more than 30 years ago. He worked for local printing firm Inkprint for several years and spent some time working behind the bar at the King's Arms. Mr Maguire joined the town council representing the Liberal Democrats following a by-election in November 2002, and served as chair of the parks committee. He was also the town council's representative on Okehampton Chamber of Trade. Ian Bailey, former chairman of the chamber and proprietor of Inkprint said: "He came to us without any book-keeping experience but he was very keen and enrolled on a course at Exeter College and passed his book-keeping exams." Mr Maguire was also an avid football fan with an allegiance to Exeter City.

Paddy's brief bio produced for our 2002 reunion.

I have been a resident of Okehampton for 32 years. I spent 20 years in the Merchant Navy as a Radio Officer employed by Marconi International Marine. I left the Merchant Navy in 1983 and have worked as a book-keeper at Ink Print in Station Road until my early retirement in March 2001.

I have studied at the Exeter Business School to gain professional accountancy qualifications and I am a fully qualified Accounting Technician. In 1995 I was one of only 5 people in Devon & Cornwall to receive a "Lifetime Learners Award' from Devon and Cornwall TEC.

Liberal Democrat member of Okehampton Town Council.
